  • Julian Dubuque was the first known European settler of Iowa. He started mining lead near present-day Dubuque, Iowa, in the 1780s.
  • Buffalo hunter and Wild-West showman William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was born in Le Claire, Iowa.
