Lewis & Clark, & Sgt Floyd:
- Explorers Lewis & Clark and their men traveled up the Missouri River along Iowa's west coast on their expedition to the Pacific Coast. Their maps and journals are some of the earliest recording of western Iowa geography.
- Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis & Clark party to die on the multi-year trip, died near present-day Sioux City of appendicitis . A large obelisk was built in 1901 to honor him.
