Geocache Description:

A nice place to stop, but don't pull off any further unless you want help from the 'advertised' towing services. Great views here of the 'lake' and wind farms.

Update: Unfortunately the 'bogged' sign has been removed and new fences and gates put in place warning of biosecurity hazards. Cache name updated - all other details remain the same - no room for swaps

At 25 km long and 10 km wide, Lake George is long, flat and extremely shallow, with a very small catchment. These features increase evaporation rates and help explain the mysterious filling and drying episodes. The unusual fluctuations in the lake's levels have given rise to fanciful urban myths that the lake is somehow connected to lakes in Peru or South Africa. Others suggest that the lake may indeed be connected to the nearby Yass River by subterranean aquifers and that this connection may explain the salinity of the river.
