Geocache Description:

[ESP] El loco es una especie de abalón (Concholepas concholepas), que vive en las costas de Chile y Perú. A la gente le encanta comerlos en entradas de marisco, en sopas o solo con mayonesa y limón. Ha sido un molusco tan apetecido que la mayoría desapareció por sobreexplotación, por lo que el tiempo de disfrutar este gran gasterópodo marino se acabó. Hoy en día la pesquería de locos solo es posible en lugares designados, con licencia y solo durante la primer etapa del año. Sin embargo, todavía a veces se pude escuchar el grito de los vendedores en las ferias libres: “¡Loco, loco, loco, tengo loco!”. Es posible también que lo encuentres en tu plato de mariscos en un restaurante.

Aquí, en Punta de Choros, hay varios cementerios de locos (mas conocidos como conchal), como se puede observar en muchas lugares de la costa chilena. Uno de ellos está entre el lugar del cache y la playa cerca de la caleta. Muchas de las conchas que se pueden encontrar son mas pequeñas que 10 cm, medida que hoy es el tamaño mínimo para la extracción legal y, por eso, podemos saber que fueron capturados ilegalmente o antes del establecimiento de esta medida.

El cache está escondido al lado del pequeño faro. Aunque el sitio del cache es mas o menos accesible fácilmente, por favor, ten cuidado con las rocas sueltas durante la búsqueda. Que disfrutes el lugar, con la costa imperante y la tranquilidad de Punta de Choros!

[ENG] The locos are a species of abalones (Concholepas concholepas), home to the coasts of Chile and Peru. The people here love them and eat them in seafood salads,in soups or just like that, with mayonnaise or salt and lemon. They love them so much that the majority of the loco populations are gone by now and the time of deliberately feasting on this big marine snails is over. The extraction of this valuable resource is now only legal with special permits, within designated areas and during the first half of the year. Nevertheless you'll still hear some vendors at the marketplace screaming “¡Loco, loco, loco, tengo loco!” and most likely will also find it on the seafood plate when visiting the next restaurant.

Here in Punta de Choros there is a loco graveyard between the cache site and the little beach next to the fishermen community, i.e. shell remains as in so many parts of the Chilean coast. Many of the shells are smaller than 10 cm, the minimum shell size for fishing, and therefore caught illegally.

The cache is situated next to the small lighthouse. Be careful while exploring the area as some rocks may be loose and the cliffs are steep. The cache site is quite accessible though. Enjoy the search, the rough coastline and the small and tranquil Punta de Choros!
