Welcome to nathanjhuntโs first series of caches. There are 8 in total on the main route, plus 2 extra if you have a bit more time on your hands. The series makes for a good cache and dash with stopping places very close to each cache, but would equally make an excellent cycle route as the road is already frequented by cyclists. For those feeling extra adventurous, the route can also be walked as the roads are very empty, but please be wary, especially round corners as the road is narrow. The route is 15km / 9 miles in total if you include the extra 2 caches.
Marsh Road is an old road on the Dengie peninsular. The area of land between Burnham, Southminster, Asheldham, Tillingham and Bradwell used to be salt marshes, until the area was reclaimed from the sea hundreds of years ago. The land was used for agriculture, and most of it has stayed in private hands to this day, making the area one of the most remote parts of Essex to the public. Marsh Road (as Hall Road) leaves Southminster, and is the only public road that runs out into the area of former marshes, before it sweeps back round via Monsale and Deal Hall and carries on to Burnham. The area is incredibly remote and very few people visit it, in turn making it a beautiful and peaceful place to visit in the middle of the countryside.
Cache number 6 is placed at Deal Hall, the name for the cluster of houses at this location. On a bright clear day, you can get a glimpse of Foulness Island from this spot. The two metal towers on the horizon is where target practice takes place. An object is raised between the two and is shot down by tanks or heavy artillery. Missed shots are sent out into the North Sea, hence the no-go-zone on the Maplin Sands. Parking is available opposite GZ.
