In 1939 the actress Bette Davis (1908-1989) was out hiking by herself and got lost near Bridal Veil Falls. An employee of a local Sugar Hill, NH inn named Arthur Farnsworth found her and took her back to the trailhead. They fell in love and on New Year's Eve 1940 Farnsworth and Davis were married. After Farnsworth died in 1943 Davis had a plaque mounted on a boulder beside Coppermine Brook, near the spot where Farnsworth had found her, and the plaque remains there to this day.
