This historic site, located on New Castle Island and overlooking the Piscataqua River, was originally a military installation built around 1842 to protect the harbor. It was named in honor of the commander of N.H. forces at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. Fortification was further improved after the Spanish American War in 1898.
