The valley in front of you was devastated by a wild fire in August 2013; firefighters worked for over 24 hours to protect the farm you see before you and the site of ancient Kourion on the horizon above it. Evacuations took place from the surrounding villages and the fire raged throughout the night with a ferocity borne of unusually high winds. The main road was closed for a day and only the bravery of the firefighters saved the surrounding villages; we live a few miles away and could see the smoke and flames roaring towards us.
Once it was extinguished, we could see that the devastation of the valley was complete - except for the farm. The firefighters had battled long and hard but had managed to protect the buildings and they stood as an oasis in the centre of the smoke filled blackness.
Today, the area is regenerating itself and the farm is blooming. A new walking trail of 4 kilometres has been set, and this cache will take you to the trailhead. A couple of benches await for you to sit and ponder the undoubted bravery and dedication of the Fire Service.
