The Georgia Geo-Campers will be camping at Fort McAllister State Park the weekend of November 14th. This is our THIRD YEAR camping in this awesome park that is filled with rich history!
UPDATE: We ARE camping inside the fort again! That's right, we are NOT going to be in pioneer site 'Anderson' as previously announced. Our group will camp near the Tower, in the same general area as we have the past two years but closer to the visiter's center. This spot also gives us access to the center's restrooms (yay for no pit privy). We still get to enjoy this year's very special treat - the park is hosting "Before the Storm" historical living history reenactment. The reenactors will be occupying the fort and parade ground where our campout usually is. (Thanks to RangerDoc for the recon assist!)
Please be aware that there may be an additional fee for the daytime tour for our campers at the GGA event. We are working to have that fee covered for folks camping with us but it may not be possible to waive it.
Schedule of Activities:
6:00 Stone Soup (bring a can or other item to add to the pot & share dinner with us)
6:30 Bonfire (we supply the s'mores)
7:30 Prizes/activities - including the Jackpot Camper Drawing (bring unactivated trackables to participate)
8:00 "Cannon Firing in the Fort" of Ft. McAllister
--->You don't have to camp out to be able to attend this event.<---
COST:
$25 per tent for two days camping (Friday and Saturday).
$5 Cannon Firing in the Fort for non-campers (with a park pass per vehicle).
NOTE:
Please sign up *here* for reservations with in your "Will Attend" or email via our profile (PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE PARK!). They are holding the area for us, and we will be providing them with the list of the "fort campers". eg Will Attend - one camp needed.
Some camping geocachers will be arriving on the 13th to take full advantage of
*all
* the activities for the weekend and to explore this great park. Fort McAllister has a variety of camping accommodations if you don't want to camp with us. Make
Reservations here.
Each vehicle will need a $5.00 parking or seasonal pass and the folks camping with us will park near the posted coordinates for this event. There will be water and restrooms for us but no electric. Showers can be used in the camp ground. Hammock campers: No trees available** but feel free to bring your stands/tripods! The tents can stay up as long as they don't block the daily visitors. Tent canopies are allowed.
**Trees on the historic site grounds CANNOT be used for hammocks.
SPECIAL NOTES
What is "Before the Storm"? It's a group of 40 confederate reenactors firing muskets and cannons, reliving a crucial time in history. Their activity will be around the clock with hourly bugle calls, etc. We are fortunate to be allowed to camp near the action and imagine what the fort was like long, long ago.
"Get Outdoors Festival" is also happening at Fort McAllister the weekend of our camp out. Our group will have Free Admission all day (9a-5p) because we have agreed to host a Geocaching Information Table (thanks RangerDoc for stepping up on this!!). We need volunteers to help Doc out during 9a-5p and a 30 minute class on Geo 101 sometime during the festival, time to be determined later.
We encourage pictures of the "fun" at any of our camping events and hope to see them posted with your "attended" log.
