Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates! You will need to play a Wherigo cartridge to find this cache. This cache has been published with permission from Sheffield City Council. Many thanks to them and to SimeyBop and Marky1981 who tested the cartridge for me!

Please note that this Wherigo cartridge has not been tested on all GPS devices, so is still in 'beta' testing. It has been tested on certain smartphones. It is recommended that a smartphone app is used to play this cartridge. Any feedback about the cartridge from GPS device users is greatly appreciated. Apps have been developed for a variety of smartphones, but I cannot give specific advice as to do so would be a commercial endorsement. Please get in contact through my profile if this is your first Wherigo and you require help.

Spring Heeled Jack

Many people who use the park today still talk of a mysterious and mischievous character who was supposed to inhabit the grounds. It was reported by Sheffield Historian Hen Tatton how the ghost, alias Spring Heeled Jack, could spring through a five barred gate like a cat. It used to appear at all times of the night, robed in white, and sudden appeared in front of people, mostly courting couple, and then suddenly disappeared when anyone tried to get hold of it. It used to come out of the grounds of the Cholera Monument springing and jumping about the quarry and over the walls, suddenly appeared on Skye Edge and Arbourthorne, and all around that district. People were afraid to go out at night and they used to carry sticks to attack it. This went on for a long time 'til the people started to go out in crowds to try to capture it, and the ghost had some very narrow escapes.

Rumours about the appearance of the ghost spread like wildfire through Sheffield in those days, and steadily the account of the antics of this strange visitor became more and more horrific. The Park Ghost was described as tall, giant and of "unearthly aspect", as he was seen skimming over the ground with supernatural swiftness and making leaps, huge leaps into the air and over walls. One eye witness told the Sheffield Telegraph he had seen the ghost clear a wall in one bound - no mean feat, for the wall, on subsequent measurement proved to be 14'3" in height. Another told, after leaping out onto two young girls he seized them and after whirling them around he threw them over a fence. A third said the night before this prank the ghost had been seen shot through the ankle by a vigilante, but bounded away more merry than ever.

The Geocache

There is a new geocache that has been published in the Cholera Monument grounds. All you have to do is find it! Use the Wherigo cartridge to access your GPS. Just be careful Spring Heeled Jack doesn't interfere with your search...

This cache is recommended at night, for the spooky factor. If you do go at night, it may be best to not go alone, lest you not return... and don't forget a torch, so you can search for the cache, if you get there. The Wherigo is entirely contained within the Cholera Monument Grounds and Clay Woods, so will involve around a 1km walk (there and back). The trail is fully wheelchair accessible, but a wheelchair user will need someone else to retrieve the cache.

FTF Hunters: SimeyBop and Marky1981 signed a special 'tested by' section, so you can still claim a FTF on the log. Good luck!
