Il nome della Villa dei Misteri si deve agli affreschi che ornano la Sala dei Misteri, alla quale si accede attraverso un passaggio laterale dal soggiorno.
Nella Sala dei Misteri si può ammirare uno straordinario ciclo pittorico di dieci sequenze del I secolo a.C. ispirato alla pittura greca, con personaggi a grandezza naturale.
Ancora incerti sono il soggetto e il significato dell'affresco, che potrebbe raffigurare dei momenti di un rito, oppure uno spettacolo di mimi o i preparativi per un matrimonio: secondo alcuni studiosi, tale rito potrebbe essere quello dell'iniziazione di una sposa al dio Dioniso.
Gli affreschi della Villa sono stati recentemente restaurati: il restauro ha richiesto circa due anni, e la Villa ha riaperto al pubblico nel marzo del 2015.

The name of the Villa of the Mysteries is due to the frescoes that adorn the Hall of Mysteries, which is accessed through a side passage from the living room.
In the Hall of the Mysteries you can admire an extraordinary pictorial cycle of ten sequences of the first century BC inspired by the Greek painting, with life-size.
Still uncertain are the subject and the meaning of the fresco, which could depict moments of a ritual, or a show of mime or to make preparations for a wedding, according to some scholars, this ritual would be to initiation of a bride to the god Dionysus .
The frescoes in the Villa have been recently restored: the restoration took about two years, and the Villa has reopened to the public in March of 2015.
