Park your car on the south side of Windeyer Road in front of the church and take your time to enjoy the surroundings. The church, and the local Primary school, which closed down at the end of 2014. There is a distinct lack of the sound of children playing on that equipment...
The Anglican Church (Church of the Holy Redeemer) was built of local stone between 1866 and 1873 to replace the first, short-lived church and rectory (1859). It was consecrated and opened by noted ecclesiastical figure, Samuel Marsden. It is a very simple and unpretentious building. Further back towards, and alongside Meroo Creek, the cemetery has monuments dating from 1856, some of which are in remarkably good condition for their age. During its history, it has suffered through many years of neglect and even desecration when Chinese grave markers were vandalised during a gold-miners’ dispute in the early days. Two Chinese gravestones were saved and removed from the cemetery for their protection, eventually finding their way to the Windeyer caravan park. They were on display beside the reception area there for a number of years but have recently been placed in the Mudgee Museum. They are engraved with Chinese characters only. Today, however, the cemetery is enjoying a new lease of life, having been cleaned up and maintained in good order by the Mid-Western Regional Council. Nice easy park and grab. Plenty of room to park the car and wander around.
