Between 1854 and the 1950s, Knox Bridge would have been your way to travel to and from GA to SC. Hwy 59 crossed the Tugaloo River at Knox Bridge connecting GA and SC before the construction of Lake Hartwell (see images from 1920s and 1947). The Interstate 85 bridge was built around the same time Lake Hartwell began to fill in 1961. We have heard that Sherman crossed Knox Bridge during the Civil War, but have not been able to confirm. Here is more information we found in the GA archives:
Hart County, ca. 1947. Knox's Bridge was built in 1854 by Samuel Knox of Franklin County. The architect was a Col. Bowman of Elberton, Georgia. This covered bridge which spans the Tugaloo River was constructed using slave labor. The bridge was destroyed by fire in the 1950s. The bridge was an example of the town lattice design.
