Geocache Description:

La Canebière est incontestablement l'artère la plus populaire de Marseille.

Elle s'étend sur 1000 mètres depuis le Vieux Port jusqu'à l'Eglise des Réformés.

Elle porte ce nom depuis 1927 (anciennement orthographié "Cannebière") ; il viendrait du provençal "canebe" ("cannabis" en latin) signifiant "chanvre" : en effet, au Moyen Âge, Marseille était un des plus grands comptoirs de chanvre au monde pour la fabrication et le commerce des élingues et cordages. (Mais ça, c'était avant... ou pas !)

Sa renommée dans la mémoire collective des Français est en partie due à une célèbre chanson écrite par René Sarvil et composée par Vincent Scotto : écoutez ici

Pour atteindre la cache, je vous conseille vivement d'utiliser les transports en commun :
- Métro ligne 1 (M1) : station "Vieux-Port"
- Métro ligne 2 (M2) : station "Noailles"
- Tramway ligne 1 (T1) : station "Noailles"
- Tramway ligne 2 (T2) : station "Canebière-Capucins"
- Tramway ligne 3 (T3) : station "Cours Saint-Louis"
- Bus n°57, 61, 80, 81, ou 83
Vous avez également la possibilité de louer un vélo ("le vélo")
Enfin, si vous venez en voiture, sachez qu'il existe plusieurs parkings à proximité (payants !)

La Canebière is decidedly the most popular street of Marseille.

It runs about 1000 meters from the Old Port to the Réformés Church.

It have this name since 1927 (in the past spelled "Cannebière") ; it would come from the Provençal dialect "canebe" ("cannabis" in Latin) who means "hemp" : indeed, at the Middle Ages, Marseille was one of the largest counters of hemp in the world for the manufacturing and the trade of the slings and ropes. (But it was before... or not !)

Its fame in the collective memory of the French is partly due to a famous song written by René Sarvil and composed by Vincent Scotto : listen here

To reach the hiding place, I advise you highly to use public transport :
- Subway line 1 (M1) : "Vieux-Port" station
- Subway line 2 (M2) : "Noailles" station
- Tram line 1 (T1) : "Noailles" station
- Tram line 2 (T2) : "Canebière-Capucins" station
- Tram line 3 (T3) : "Cours Saint-Louis" station
- Bus n°57, 61, 80, 81, or 83
You also have the possibility of renting a bicycle ("le vélo")
Lastly, if you come by car, will know there exist several carparks in the vicinity (paying !)
