Geocache Description:

This is a straightforward drive-by near the main road between Thirsk and Northallerton.

Adjacent to GZ is a footpath leading to a path with another (unconnected) cache from where you can go back to the east end of the village or follow a path behind the houses to near the pub which, alas, is closed and for sale at the time of placing this cache.

The village of Thornton le Moor is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Torentun from a Saxon word meaning fortified place or tower. Sadly there is no tower in the village since it lost two in recent times. In 1940, the 90 ft tower of Baxter's brewery was taken down as it was a possible landmark for German bombers. The brewery was a mainstay of the area in the 19th century, but closed in the 1920s, to the dismay of local medics, who held its ales in high repute for their tonic properties. (Always said ale is good for you!)

In 1987 St. Barnabas Church and its tower were demolished, having become unsafe. It had been built in 1868 to replace a much older building but did not last anything like as long as the original. The churchyard remains consecrated as the village burial ground, but before 1868, coffins were taken along the corpse road to be buried at the church of North Otterington, where there is another roadside cache.

Find a road called Crindle Carr Lane which leads eastward from the village. No meaning was found for Crindle, but it is known as a surname. Since Carr means a fen woodland often dominated by alder or willow, we guess the lane once led to a woodland owned by someone named Crindle, but If you know better please tell  us.

14th century lords of the manor owned a ducking stool, pillory and gallows, but we think these are not used now. Just in case though, as always, respect the area when caching.

Don’t forget a pen and tweezers may be useful but please replace the cache as found
