A short stroll down memory lane.
Succeeding floods had weakened the original Jewry St Bridge to such an extent in 1964 that a load limit had been imposed on it. It was closed in 1968 after the council ruled that it was unsafe. Pending the construction council built a temporary, Low level concrete crossing 150mtrs downstream. The crossing was quite adequate but only in dry weather. By 1970 a tender was accepted to build a 4 span concrete bridge 47mtrs long & 7.3mtrs wide, with two traffic lanes and a 2mtr wide footpath. The bridge decking was 0.9mtr above the height of any known flood. The bridge was built to a total cost of $61,500. And was opened for general use in early December 1971. Parking in front of the footy field. Take a walk down the old bypass road where at the end you can still see the remains of the crossing now known as the Jewry St Weir. Closer to the end there will be a small cache with log and small swappable items. Bring a pen or pencil with you. Cache can be lifted off it's support.
