Geocache Description:

Strathcona Trail Cache

This is a quick park and grab , safe pullout on west side of road . Cache is a custom made "Bison" tube magnetic , a 45-70 cartridge , one of the great historic big game calibres as well as US govt. issue from 1870 to 1897. 45 calibre , 70 grains of black powder and a 405 grain soft lead bullet . Lethal out to 3000 yards with a trajectory like a long football pass.

Stathcona Ave as its now called , was always refered to as the River Road and was the horse and wagon trail from the south until the late 1940s. At that time most roads were not plowed in winter so team and sleigh was the only way to travel . You would see farmers and Whitecap Band members hauling oats, hay or fence pickets to be sold at the City Market at Ave. A and 21st. Street. They would often camp by the bridge at Beaver Creek  then drive the last 10 miles on Saturday morning. The trail ran north to the CNR tracks then east 1/2 mile to a crossing at the west edge of the Exhibition Grounds. From the EX.  it was east on Ruth for a block then a trail ran north east to Eastlake Ave. . North to the river , down the "long" hill to the Traffic Bridge the left on 19th to Ave B and north to the "Market" at 21st for the regular Saturday auction sale. After the sale and shopping they could overnight at the Exhibition barns then make the long trek home on Sunday.

PLEASE WHEN CLOSING USE MODERATE PRESSURE WITH A TWIST THEN TRY OPENING IT AND IT SHOULD OPEN EASILY WITH A TWIST AND PULL . Its really an old trappers match holder in case you fall into the beaver pond . Please see the photo showing construction - REMEMBER - The next finder may be a 90 lb girl or a frail old man - don't try to impress them with your muscle's !
