Geocache Description:

An interesting spot between Cloncurry and Mount Isa where Grey Nomads congregate to celebrate their freedom to camp.

A syndicate of eight people headed by Clem Walton and Norm McConachy discovered uranium on 4th July 1954. Two days later the leases were pegged out and the deposit was named "Mary Kathleen" in memory of Norm's wife.

Production was based on contracts for the sale of uranium & the town was inhabited between 1956 to 1963 where it went into mothballs. Then in 1974 the mine re-opened & thrived with a population over 2000 until 1983 when the mine was once again closed.

The entire infastructure including all the houses went to public auction on the 11th April 1983 and the town was no more!
