Alviso was a major shipping port on the Bay, but the completion of the railroad line between San Jose and San Francisco in 1864 brought a faster and cheaper means to move goods in and out of Santa Clara Valley. The town drifted into obscurity as time stepped over and around it, until the recent boom in the valley began to lift things up.
This cache is placed almost at the coordinates for the final of the multi-cache "Public Shore" (GC28HB6), which was also stepped over and around, and then archived. Rather than restore all the supplemental stages we're simply using the final location. If the original owner becomes active again and wishes the location back, all he need do is ask. If you found that one before, you know where to look. If not, then you get the surprise for the first time. This was one of Atomsoup's neat hide spots and we're happy to keep it going.
VTA bus route 59 serves Alviso and connects to VTA Green and Orange light rail lines as well as Caltrain and ACE rail. Transfer from route 20 to get here from the Milpitas BART station
Please use stealth to the extent possible, especially when the nearby boats are occupied. Also, use the parking waypoint provided at the corner of Hope and Taylor Streets and do NOT park in the Yacht Club lot. This is reserved for their members and guests and is clearly posted.
Update 6/27/2020: You may also park at the Alviso Marina. The paved Bay Trail section runs south from there to ground zero. This route has a longer walk but fewer stairs and may be easier for many. The terrain rating is upped to a 2.
Update 9/2/2020: A new container and hide is in place. Not as cool as the old hide but the new structure certainly looks sturdier. Please re-hide cache in its hiding spot, this new structure is far more open that the old.
Congratulations to kablooey and belindalimm for FTF honors.
