Geocache Description:

This should be a fairly simple cache but please STAY WELL CLEAR OF THE CLIFF EDGE. The soil here is extremely unpredictable and a fall would be very unpleasant! Also please follow the trailhead as this will save you time and/or a dangerous attempt at climbing the fence. Be safe cachers.

I grew up in this area and we always called the ruins 'The Castle' while at the same time understanding it to be an old train station. However a quick internet search reveals the truth. Set up in the early 19th century, this fortification was part of a coastal defense system stretching from Bray to Sandymount. A string of batterys and Martello towers were set up with the possibility of an invasion by the French in mind. No tower was built at this location and it never saw action. The old road to the Battery is evident from the air. The tree lined route is known as Battery Wood.

Congrats to Sarahmur on FTF
