Among these crowded spruce grow horsetails, mosses, mushrooms and, if you're lucky enough to spot them, small clumps of indian pipe. Be very careful not to disturb these; they are delicate and rare.
At the bases of some of the spruce you may see piles of reddish-brown husks left by squirrels as they shucked cones. In autumn, a single red squirrel may cut and bury as many as 15 000 cones for its winter food supply.
