The slim leaves of rough fescue are folded lengthwise, growing that way to limit their surface area and so conserve moisture. If you draw one between your fingers you will find that, pulled one way, it slides easily but rasps in the opposite direction. Hence the name.
Rough Fescue prairie is characteristic of parklands and has almost disappeared because it grows on soil easily converted into good farmland. The largest example of intact fescue prairie in Manitoba is found in Riding Mountain National Park.
