Byzantine churches of Crete.
History of Crete is fascinating. This mosaic rightly includes also Byzantine churches. On the
island there are at least 300 registered Byzantine churches. They are located throughout Crete.
Some are dated to the 6th century AD, some cave churches belong to the most unique ones.
About 12 km from Chania there is a mountain village called Alikianos. It is the home of one
of the Byzantine churches, which is made available for visitors throughout the whole year. It
is called Ag. Georgios and dates since 1243. There are beautifully preserved frescoes and
icons in it that indicate the ancient history of art and devotion of the faithful believers. The
natives take care of the church very well, use it for a variety of church services and baptize
their children in it.
