OAHT 1503: Aepplers Orchard
This Geocache WAS part of the 2015 Oconomowoc Area Historical Tour:
Just south of this location was Aepplers Orchard. Started in 1926 the first trees were planted by C. W. Aeppler. Mr. Aeppler was a teacher at Oconomowoc High School at the time and for several years had kept bees and sold honey before deciding that a small orchard would be a valuable addition to his property.
Additional fields were planted with apple trees in 1927, 1932, 1945 and 1953 totally 56 ½ acres. Over the years there were 9,000 trees with 23 varieties of apples represented. 14,000 – 18,000 customers visited the orchards each year. In addition to the apples, cider, jellies, honey and other products were sold.
In October 1997, 51.5 acres were sold. 5 acres, the original house and several original apples trees remain on the property. If you drive in the neighborhoods south of this location, you will notice that many streets are named after the variety of apples.
