La battaglia dell'ansa
L'ansa del Piave a Zenson (TV) fu teatro di due storiche battaglie combattute durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale tra l'esercito italiano e quello austro-ungarico: la “battaglia d'arresto” (14 novembre-27 novembre 1917) e “la battaglia del Solstizio” (giugno 1918). Le unità italiane riuscirono a fermare l'avanzata austriaca e tedesca nella prima battaglia del Piave. Il generale italiano Luigi Cadorna, che verrà sostituito da Armando Diaz nel novembre del 1917 dopo la disfatta di Caporetto, aveva fatto ripiegare l'esercito sul fiume Piave. In quest'ansa gli austriaci riuscirono a varcare il fiume, ma giunti sulla riva destra, vennero contrattaccati dall'esercito italiano e furono costretti ad abbandonarla il primo gennaio 1918.
Nel giugno 1918, l'esercito austro-ungarico contrattaccò con una grande offensiva, convinto di porre fine brevemente al conflitto con l'Italia e di raggiungere la fertile pianura padana impossessandosi delle scorte italiane. Ma l'esercito italiano e Diaz riuscirono a prevedere le mosse degli avversari, arrestando la loro avanzata sul Piave, prima a Nervesa, poi a Ponte di Piave, Fagarè e infine appunto a Zenson. Il 18 giugno 1918 si combattè una sanguinosa battaglia nell’ansa e l'esercito austriaco subì una pesante disfatta e fu costretto a ritirarsi. Questa battaglia segnò una fase cruciale per l'esito della guerra, a favore dell'Italia.
Questa croce fu collocata dalle autorità nazionali nel 1925 per ricordare i caduti del 18 giugno 1918. Spazzata via dall'alluvione del 1966, la croce viene ripristinata il 9 novembre 2008.
The battle of the river bend
The bend of Piave river in Zenson (TV), it was the scenery of two important battles fought during the First World War between the Italian and the Austro-hungarian army: the first was the “Battle of the halt”, 14th November-27th November 1917, and the second was “The battle of the Solstice” (June 1918). The Italian soldiers managed to stop the Austrian and German army in the first battle of the Piave river. The Italian lieutenant general Luigi Cadorna, who will be replaced by Armando Diaz in November 1917 after the battle of Caporetto, had made the Italian army come back on Piave river. On this river bend the Austrians managed to go through the river, but when they arrived on the right side, the Italian army started to attack them and so, on 1st January 1918, they had to abandon that side.
In June 1918 the Austro-hungarian army attacked the italian one, just because they thought it would have been a very short conflict and that would have managed to reach the fertile Lowland of the Po and the Italian supplies. But the Italian army and its general Diaz managed to foresee the moves of the opponent, stopping them first in Nervesa and then in Ponte di Piave, Fagarè and Zenson. On 18th June 1918 a bloody battle was fought on the river bend and the Austrian army was defeated and had to retreat. This battle was very important for the win of Italian.
This cross was located by the Italian authorities in 1925 in memory of the dead of the 18th June 1918. During the flood of 1966 the cross was destroyed by the water, so it was replaced on 9th November 2008.
