Annual Egg Hunt - Orange Traditional Cache
PurpleCatPaws: The rabbit may be tricky, but these woods are even trickier! Wildlife, flooding, and decaying trees have all been conspiring against this series. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted!!

The Easter bunny has been hopping through North Stonington! Each of the first six caches in the series (Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Blue, and Red) will provide you with one of the missing numbers in the final’s coordinates, which are: N 41° 25.ABC W 071° 51.DEF Be sure to write down the found numbers as you go along! I suggest starting at the Green-Orange-Pink end of the trail.
This series will bring you to the beautiful D.R. Henne Memorial and Shunock Brook Preserves. The trail runs alongside wetlands and crosses many little wooden bridges. From beginning to end you can expect a hike of approximately 2.5 miles. (The walk itself would take about an hour without pausing for searches, but be sure to allow yourself plenty of time. The finds are pretty easy, but that silly rabbit might have a trick up his sleeve!) I have set the terrain rating for all of the caches in the series as a “3” although some might be easier to reach depending on which parking location you’re coming from. You can (and should) print a trail map by going here: http://www.avalonialandconservancy.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/henne.pdf TRAIL NOTES: • In the interest of full disclosure, I gave all of the caches the attributes “poison ivy” and “thorns” because you will encounter both over the course of the series. However, they are sparse and quite navigable; just pay attention to where you’re putting your feet! I’ve hiked it many times in shorts and always left without a scratch. • Most of the trails are clear, but they can be overgrown in some spots. • The main trail is blazed blue and all of the side trails are blazed red. The trail map shows a white trail and a couple “unmarked” trails but those are all, in fact, blazed red! (Do follow the “white” trail down to the water; you’ll discover a terrific view of the reserve!) PARKING: I’m providing parking coordinates for two locations: on Shunock Estates Loop Road (suggested) and on Surrey Lane (alternate). Weirdly, the entrances on both ends of Shunock Estate Loop Road are marked "Private" and indicate that only residents and their visitors are allowed. I received confirmation from the preserve’s property manager that this is a perfectly acceptable place to park, and it is marked on the trail map as such. Ignore the signs! You will be parked at the trail head and not on private property. If you choose instead to park at the end of Surrey Lane, be aware that this end of the trail is quite overgrown with thorns and poison ivy. It’s challenging, but passable. Please don’t post any spoilers in the comments/pictures, and rehide all containers/logs as found. You will need to bring your own pen! Grab your bug spray and enjoy! This series was placed with permission.
