Although all caches are hidden near the Lake Ontelaunee Reservoir, it is not at these posted coordinates - no swimming is required to obtain any cache in this series *smile*

BEST Geo-Art: B03/03

Douglassville, Amity Township, Berks County, PA

This historic Inn (or Tavern) is located in Douglassville, Amity Township. The building is situated on the banks of the Schuylkill River. Built circa 1727 by Marcus Huling and later enlarged by George Douglass, the Inn served as a tavern during Colonial times.

In 1762, about a decade and a half before the Founding Fathers formulated the Declaration of Independence, George Douglass was the proprietor of the Inn. In the fateful years that followed, as resistance to rule by the king of England grew in the American colony, the tavern harbored clandestine Berks County militia intent upon revolution. During the Revolutionary War, the tavern was a mustering place for the Continental levies and a training ground for militia. During its existence, the tavern housed many notably people. George Washington visited the property twice.

The name of this historic Inn is called the...

A. Pale Pony Inn (N 40° 27.972 W 075° 55.749)
B. White Horse Inn (N 40° 27.978 W 075° 55.741)
C. Painted Pony Inn (N 40° 27.972 W 075° 55.733)
D. Black Horse Inn (N 40° 27.984 W 075° 55.749)

Note: It can be visited at N 40 15.217, W 75 43.517. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 21, 1975.

Note:  This cache has the hunting attribute selected. Hunters wear orange, and when the time is right, and so should you. During hunting season, it is best to do this series on a Sunday. The majority of the cache containers are hidden within 10 - 20 feet from the trail. Since these caches are hidden in the woods, you will encounter things like wildlife, poison ivy, bugs, ticks, etc. That is just part of geocaching in the great outdoors. Good Luck.
