Geocache Description:

This is stop 3 on the 2km looped heritage trail. This is the 1798 Monument.

The Monument was erected to mark the centenary of the 1798 uprising. The present surrounds were put in place in 1948 and the cannons added in 1985. The Myles Byrne commemorative stone was added in 2012, by Comoradh 98, to mark the 150th anniversary of his death in Paris.

THE CACHE:

A small hide. bring your own pen. A tweezers may also be needed to access the logbook.

THE TRAIL:

I have adapted the historical trail to only a few sites as they are too close together to place a cache at each one! If you are following in sequence, stop into the tourist office for a Heritage trail map to see each of the 15 sites Gorey has to offer!

Welcome to Gorey, The gateway town of the sunny south east! A town or community of Guaire, Gory, Gorie, Gowrie or Goury has been in existence from 1296. The current town was established by charter in 1619 and given the name Newborough, but this never eveloped intogeneral use. Gorey is now a thriving tourist centre and market town.

This trail shows how the history of Gorey entwines with modern living in this dynamic town. It includes places of worship, a heritage garden and modern public offices giving a unique insight to the character of the town. The trail is 2km in length and takes 1 hour for the average walker but can take linger depending on how much time is given to each site. It is stroller and wheelchair accessible. All sites can be arrived at and viewed from the public foothpath. there is ample parking in the town and is one euro for an hour of 2euro all day depending on where you park. Free parking after 6pm and on Sundays.

The trail is in development with Gorey Town council. Additional signage and interpretative material will follow. Guides can be picked up and tours arranged from the Gorey Tourist Office on Main Street if you are interested.

Gorey is one hour drive from dublin and can be reached by rail or by coach. For more ifo please visit www.irishrail.ie, www.buseireann.ie or www. wexfordbus.com
