DeRoux Peak Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
DeRoux Peak is located north west of the Koppen-DeRoux saddle. Unlike it's neighbor Koppen there is no trail to the summit from the saddle. However, the terrain is straight forward so travel is relatively easy and there should not be navigation issues as you can just follow the ridge line over to the summit.
Do you like to hike? Do you like off trail, ridge run summits? Do you like solitary, expansive views with a relatively small commitment? If you answered yes to one or more of those questions then DeRoux is the summit for you!
The summit of DeRoux is pretty similar to getting to Koppen except that a) there is no defined trail once you leave the saddle and b) it is physically less challenging. From the summit you can see Koppen, Hawkins, Esmeralda, Iron, and many others.
There are three main ways to get to the summit:
1. Via the DeRoux Spur trail the cross country from the saddle
2. Via the Boulder-DeRoux trail to the Elsnore Mine trail then cross country from that saddle
3. Via Boulder-DeRoux trail go cross country near the entry to the Esmeralda scramble
I feel pretty strongly that if you can make the effort to get all the way to a cache like this the hide should be fairly easy and this one is. There is a hint but you should not need it.
Good luck, have fun, and know your limits!
Congrats to X-Huey-Drv and Shadow for the FTF - 'bout time! :)
