Geocache Description:

English:
A direct translation of rødgran to english would be "red spruce" as "rød" is red and "gran" is spruce! However, red spruce is another tree with the scientific name Picea rubra, which is seldom seen in Denmark. The correct english name for rødgran, Picea abies, is Norway spruce. Norway spruce is very common in Denmark, it is planted in plantations, both for timber and for use as the traditional christmas tree. But it does not occur naturally except in a brief cold period after the last ice age. Denmark generally is too wet for Norway spruce in the winter, which ideally should be hard and dry. The height in Denmark is up to 40m, but 30m is more common. In better conditions it can grow up to 50m and is among the 3 highest trees in Europe. It attains this great height in the Carpathian mountains in the southwestern Ukraine.
