Geocache Description:

Cotton Belt #2 in old industrial area.  Rail Fan Series #13

Cotton Belt #2.  Yeah, I know they are out of order.  But since the cache is at Site 2 it just made since to call this #2.  This cache is at one of several abandoned Cotton Belt railroad spurs that served this Industrial area near Tyler.  This area was also home of Camp Fannin so the cache also serves the purpose of making a historical note of this World War 2 training facility.  The railroad passed by here as it does even now.

This rail crossing like most on this stretch of highway are abandonded but slow down when crossing them because some of them are rough crossings.  This area serves as a testament to how the railroads served many industiral areas with rail spurs like this one.  And this area, like many old industrial parks, is like an industrial ghost town.

The main line is visible throught the trees just to the east of the cache.  If a train passes you will see it pretty well even in the spring and summer.

Enjoy the visions from the past.

SPECIAL NOTES:

These 5 Geocaches are located along the original 21 or so miles of the Cotton Belt Railway with the first being in Big Sandy and the last in downtown Tyler.

I did not locate a cache in Winona but rather suggest you find one that is already there and in view of the railroad tracks.  So find Winona Girl Scout Troope 2989  GC55V7C for your Winona Cache.

Also, there is already a nice cache at the Cotton Belt Rail Station in Tyler.  A must stop if you are going after my 5 Cotton Belt caches.
