"Hey, are you going to the slab tonight?" That was a common question on a Friday or Saturday night teenagers asked each other in the 80's in Shandon. Back then there was no fences, no grapes, just the occasional grain crop. Us kids were free to hang out away from adults and not worry about law enforcement because we were in the middle of nowhere. A typical weekend would involve a small bonfire and barley pops. Occasionally a couch would make its way out in someones truck, and at the end of the night it would be sacrificed to the party gods. Times have changed though, probably for the better, and it looks like the slab is now used exclusively for what it was intended for.
