This track runs from the outlet of the Wairau river at the Wairau Bar, right along the beach to the Wairau Diversion. The Diversion was created after a large flood in the early 1980's which flooded most of the lower Wairau Plains after the river breached the stopbank near Renwick. This channel provises an alternative flow directly out to sea and reduces the flood levels below the SH1 bridge, which is just above the tidal influence of the river. The track continues on beyond this cache for a few km's.
Best parking is at the end of the gravel road by the locked gate - turn left at the end of the seal.
