You are searching for a cache hidden at the building that once was the St. John’s United Methodist Church. It was constructed in 1868 on land donated by Joshua Plaisted, son of Benjamin H. Plaisted who built the famous Waumbek Hotel (1860). Joshua was the father of Jared H. Plaisted who built the Corner Store (c. 1861) in Jefferson. The building was originally painted red because Nathan Perkins, another of Jefferson’s founding fathers, donated the paint, and red was his favorite color. Church services were held here until 1979 when it became the home of the Jefferson Historical Museum (open Thursday and Sunday afternoons during the summer). Of particular interest are the exhibits on the infamous 1885 Cherry Mountain Slide that cut a jagged swath down Owl's Head Mountain; the Waumbek Hotel one of the grand White Mountain resorts; and Thaddeus Lowe, the inventor of the hot air balloon and perhaps Jefferson's most famous resident. The cache is not inside the building and is placed with permission from the Jefferson Historical Society.
