Geocache Description:

A small-medium size cache in Victoria Park, Cashmere, Christchurch.

This is a tribute cache to our Australian ANZAC mates.

The Battle of Lone Pine (6-10 August 1915) was one of the climactic battles of the Gallipoli Campaign. The Australians were to mount a diversionary attack to distract the Turkish forces from the main thrust toward Chunuk Bair (in which the New Zealand troops took part). Over 2200 Australians were killed or wounded in the battle. They achieved their objective at terrible cost, but the high ground of Chunuk Bair was unable to be held, and the overall Gallipoli campaign was a costly failure.

Lone Pine is remembered particularly in Australian military history, and the main Australian memorial at Gallipoli is at the Lone Pine cemetery. In various places around Australia and New Zealand there are a pine trees that were apparently grown from seedlings taken from the original Lone Pine tree. The cache is located near such a pine tree, according to the nearby plaque.

“They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

My 6 year old daughter was keen to hide a cache. This one is in remembrance of her great-great grandfather on her mother’s side, Charles Andrew La Nauze, who was killed at the Battle of Lone Pine while serving in the Australian army. You are looking for a Vegemite container (of course, being Australian).
