Geocache Description:

Cache is located at intersection of Byng and Springfield roads. The historic homestead of Springfield is further down the road from this point. It is worth having a look.

The Springfield homestead was settled in 1830 by the Tom family who became famous for discovering the first payable gold find at Ophir in 1851 which began the gold rush. From gz there is a large hill close by where the first church services were held at ' Bethel rock' by Parson William Tom of Springfield. The Tom family are buried in the nearby cemetery.
