'새재'라는 말에는 '새(鳥)도 날아서 넘기 힘든 고개', '억새(草)가 우거진 고개', '하늘재와 이우릿재 사이(間)의 고개', '새(新)로 만든 고개'라는 뜻이 담겨 있다. 조선팔도고갯길의 대명사로 불리며, 한양 과거길을 오르내리던 선비들의 청운의 꿈, 그리고 민초들의 삶과 땅이 서려 있는 곳이기도 하다.
문경새재 1관문에서 3관문까지는 어린이나 여성, 노약자분 까지도 쉽게 걸을 수 있는 평탄한 길로 천혜의 자연 경치와 많은 공기를 마실 수 있어 걷기만 해도 건강해지는 느낌을 얻을 수 있다. 청운의 꿈을 안고 걷던 그 옛날의 선비처럼 문경새재의 길을 걸어보세요.
