Years ago in an ancient Monastery, the priest wakes one early morning to a knock on the door. He goes to answer it and finds a ragged young man. “Can I help you,” asks the priest.
“Father, I have come to ring the bell in the tower,” says the ragged young man.
The priest tells him that not only do they only ring the bell at Noon and 6 PM but that it is an honor reserved only for the oldest and most experienced clergy in the monastery.
“Please, please,” says the ragged young man and explains that this is his lifelong dream and if nothing else can ever happen to him at least he could know that his dream was realized.
The priest again explains, and says he could be in serious trouble with the church and the Bishop if he allowed someone else to ring the bell.
The ragged young man begs and begs, then finally asks, “Could I just go up into the tower and see the bell in person.”
Reluctantly the priest agrees and takes the ragged young man up into the bell tower to see the bell. He is careful to warn the ragged young man not to touch the bell and stay back from the edge of the tower for his own safety. After a few minutes the priest turns to look at the mountains in the distance and just as he is about to comment on the amazing view the ragged young man runs toward the bell and hits it face first and the bell moves slightly.
The priest runs over to try to stop the ragged young man but he again runs face first into the bell a second time as it swings back in the other direction and hits it again. This time the bell moves even further and almost begins to ring.
“STOP!” Yells the priest. But this time the ragged young man’s face is starting to bleed and he runs a third time and slams his face into the bell again. Finally the bell moves far enough to one side to begin to ring. Again for the fourth time he slams his face into the bell causing it to ring once more. The priest tries everything to stop the ragged young man but no efforts work. Finally as the bell makes a huge swoop to one side the ragged young man runs for the fifth and last time toward the bell, but the bell has swung so far to one side that he misses and falls from the tower to the streets below.
The priest looks down over the edge of the tower and sees the ragged young man’s body and crowds are beginning to gather. He runs down the stairs of the tower and out into the street to find the ragged young man lying in the street. A passing officer of the law stops and asks the priest what happened. The priest still filled with anxiety and confusion explains how the ragged young man started hitting the bell and he couldn’t stop him.
The officer asks the priest who the ragged young man is which he replies, “I really don’t know his name but his face rings a bell.”
