The area around this cache is a new housing development called Newcourt. Around 2000 new homes will be built here once the development has finished and will include a new train station (opened 2015), community centre (opened 2014) and a primary school (due to open September 2016).
Until 2008 the site was used as a Royal Navy Stores Depot. The depot was built in 1944 during the Second World War by an American Support Unit for use in the preparation for the D-Day landings. The land was acquisitioned from the neighbouring Exeter Golf and Country Club. In 1986 the depot employed 100 people and stored electrical and general goods which were used by the Royal Navy for its transport and general needs. Stores arrived by road and were checked in and placed in various store "sheds". Ships would put in their requisitions for supplies and these would be packed on site and delivered by road, rail and air.
