Geocache Description:

Which glacier produced this moraine?

Hello dear cachers,
be aware of ice bears hear, do not walk without an armed guide or your own weapon.

You are in a land of ice and glaciers and most of the shape of the countryside is formed by the movement of glaciers. We do not want to repeat the formation of moraines. We assume that you read some information about glaciers in general and the glaciers here at Svalbard.

Here you are standing at a junction point of two glaciers: the Gullybreen to the south and the Wagenbreen to the east.

Overview

Junction scheme

At the cache position you are standing in front of a high wall of randomly collected rocks. Of course, it is a moraine. Facing the moraine, Wagenbreen is behind you and Gullybreen to your left hand, behind the wall.

The big wall

In principle the wall may be formed:

  • as a central (ground) moraine (collected material that was deposited at the glaciers bottom)
  • as a side moraine (material pushed to the glaciers edges)
  • as an end moraine (material that was pushed in front of the glaciers)

To understand this EarthCache , keep in mind that any of the three glaciers from the scheme produced all types of mentioned moraines. The question is, which one was the last? The last glacier expansion usually destroyed all former moraines. In times of oscillating glaciers, they may form little end moraines on the inner walls of their own side moraine.

What do we have here? It's your task to find out.

Go to waypoint 2 and examine the wall carefully. There is a specific evidence that explains:

  • what kind of moraine it is
  • which glacier was responsible for the formation of the moraine

To log this cache, look around carefully and answer the following questions via our profile page:

  • What kind of moraine is this wall?
  • Which glacier produced this wall?
  • Which glacier was expanding last?
  • Add a foto from nearby that proofes your visit. Please do not spoil geological features!

After your mail you can log directly, we will contact you if anything is wrong. Please do not spoil the answers in your log.
