Geocache Description:

DLA2015 Kaladar Cobbles.

Kaladar lies within the Central Metasedimentary Belt.
It is one of the best spots in Southern Ontario to see examples of rocks that were heated and deformed.

During the Grenville Orogeny a billion years ago, many sedimentary rocks were compressed, buried and metamorphosed
as North America collided with South America.

Sedimentary rocks is ofter composed of the debris created, by the break down of other rocks.

These are referred to as CLASTIC rocks since they contain fragments (sand, cobbles etc) of older rocks.

At Ground zero you will find a distinctive conglomerate consisting of grey gneiss cobbles, and quartzite "floating" in a dark matrix.

What makes this site unusual is that the cobbles show a wide variation in shape, from round to ellipsoidal, as a consequence of tectonic stretching.

In many cases they have been flattened entirely and given rise to light-colored bands of gneiss.

To log this Earth Cache you must visit both sides of the highway.

Please be extremely careful.

Please send the answers to the following questions to me, via my Geocaching profile.
You DO NOT have to wait for me to respond to log your find.

QUESTIONS

At the posted coordinates

1) Find the Cobble pictured above. What are it's dimensions?
2) On the same rock face, how many pebbles are there approx.?
3) List all the colors on this same rock face.

At the second set of coordinates across the road

1) Are the Pebbles on this side of the highway generally bigger or smaller then the other side.
2) What is the dimensions of the largest one on this side?
3) Is there a reason that they are (Larger/Smaller) on average?

Remember with all my Earth Caches, the idea is to learn a bit of Geological history and have fun

It IS NOT to cause you grief trying to give perfect scientific answers

Just do your best.
