The Hyde Park Opera house sits on the site of a building originally erected in 1781 to be used as the Town Hall. Its design was perfect for shows and concerts and in 1884 a stage and lighting were added. The town hall was used for high school graduations, elections, traveling medicine shows, etc. Unfortunately in 1910 two inmates at the jail serving 10 days for public drunkenness were cold and built a fire which got out of control and ended up burning 10 houses, the Court House, the jail, the Congregational Church and the original Town Hall. Several rows of seats were saved and installed in the balcony of the new town hall which was rebuilt with bond money and insurance money in 1912.
On April 21, 1952 the Town of Hyde Park sold the hall to the Village of Hyde Park for $1.00. In 1953 the Lamoille County Players was established and the hall became the Hyde Park Opera House. There have been years and years of very talented local artists performing here.
