Geocache Description:

Venta Icenorum

A short circular walk around the site of Venta Icenorum. This series has been placed on behalf of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust with their kind permission. You can visit their website http://www.norfarchtrust.org.uk/visit.

This is the multi cache aspect of a 4 cache series which can be completed by looking at the information panels around the site while searching for the 3 traditional caches. This can be linked with a nearby cache (Roman Treasure, GCPQZW) and also the High Ash Farm circular.

For many years Venta Icenorum lay as just a Roman ruin until an archaeological team discovered the true importance of the site.

This was highlighted to the national public in an episode of Time Team a couple of years ago.

More info can be found here: http://www.norfarchtrust.org.uk/caistor where you can download their interactive app.

The panels you will need to look at to gather the co-ordinates are all of the app-compatable panels; the co-ords for these panels are listed.

You are looking to complete the following co-ordinates: N52.34.(a)(d)4 E.001.(c).(e)6(b). The order of the letters may not correspond with the order of the panels.

a = Excavations of this site began in 192(a).

b = There is a woman on one of the boards carrying a basket with food in - (b) is how many items she has in the basket.

c = You would have been looking across the town of Venta Icenorum if you were standing on this spot (c),00 years ago.

d = Count the number of words in the title on the panel at the West Gate. Take 7 away from this number to get (d).

e = The Anglo-Saxon settlement was here from the (e)th century.

We hope you enjoy your experience at this old Roman Site.
