Geocache Description:

Located just a few miles north of Hwy 50 you will find Soda & Little Soda Lake patches of blue in a sea of brown. These lakes occupy the craters of basalt cones about 3000 years old. They are fed by an underground tributary of the Carson River, after the Lahontan /Carson dam was constructed the water levels rose hundreds of feet. Before that soda was mined from the lakes the raising water flooded the mines.

Soda Lake and Little Soda Lake are two young volcanoes, younger than the sediments that were deposited in Lake Lahontan. Geologists call these types of volcanoes maars (pronounced "Mars"), so after this stop you can say that you "have been to maars." The maars are broad, low-relief, nearly circular volcanic craters. They probably formed when magma rose close to the surface, boiled the groundwater, and caused an explosive eruption of basaltic magma through the wet sediments of the lake basin. You can find telltale "basaltic bombs" around the margins of the craters. Look for small crystals of plagioclase feldspar (clear to white), olivine or peridot (green) or pyroxene (brownish black) in these dark vesicular volcanic rocks. Also called "tuff cones", maars are shallow, flat-floored craters that scientists interpret have formed above diatremes as a result of a violent expansion of magmatic gas or steam; deep erosion of a maar presumably would expose a diatreme. Maars range in size from 200 to 6,500 feet across and from 30 to 650 feet deep, and most are commonly filled with water to form natural lakes. Most maars have low rims composed of a mixture of loose fragments of volcanic rocks and rocks torn from the walls of the diatreme The cache is in a clear plastic container with a white top Duce Coop Cache #2 and geocaching.com is printed on the top & sides. There is a single use camera in the cache please use it to take a photo of you and you geocaching partner(s) if any This cache is easy to access with just about any type of vehicle. There are a few ruts and dips that may require a little ground clearance but nothing extream. There is a unpaved road the rings the rim of Soda Lake and a little beach. It's a great place to watch the sun set and or have a picnic.
