The cache is located close to a remote location known locally as
"Chinatown". There is a small monument here that has some Chinese
writing on it. I have been told that this place was once a campsite
for Chinese laborers who built railroads is this area. If you pay
close attention, you will notice that the route into this place
sometimes follows a very old (circa 1915) railroad grade. I have
also been told that this "camp" was the subject of a 60 Minutes
story. I don't know if any of these stories are fact or folklore
but they add a bit of intrigue to a very nice hike into this
beautiful spot. Enjoy!
Directions: You can get to the cache from Aukerman Road (T337)
which is a right turn from Route 381 about 2 miles north of Jones
Mills, Pennsylvania. There is a small parking area located 1.0
miles up this road at 40° 6.193, -79° 18.104. Locate a gated jeep
road in the back of this parking area and follow it to "Chinatown"
at 40° 5.535, -79° 17.552. The cache will be found nearby.
Warning: There is no sign for Aukerman Road. This narrow road is
rough dirt and gravel and its condition is unpredictable. There is
no winter maintenance. It may or may not be suitable for some
vehicles and/or drivers. Sometimes you can make it in an ordinary
passenger car without difficulty and at other times it can be
challenging for a four-wheel drive. If you or your vehicle cannot
handle this road, find a safe place to park somewhere along the way
and hike it. Take care not to block the road or any access
gates.
