Geocache Description:

A clockwise walk around Church Circle, with a little observation and math.

Cache is not at posted coordinates.

Enjoy a nice walk around Church Circle, collecting information and doing arithmetics as you go. With apologies to hardcore paperless cachers, this worksheet should help.

Welcome to Church Circle!

You're on the second-highest parcel of land in Annapolis, at the third St. Anne's Church, the previous two being destroyed in 1775 and 1858, respectively. It's open for visitors and has regular tours. The small cemetery here has an interesting history and the headstones of some important early Marylanders, but you're looking for a bronze marker on the church side of the walkway.

  • homophone for the first word on the second line _____ PLUS
  • homophone for the first word on the penultimate line _____ = A

Using the crosswalk on the north side of West Street, continue your walk on the outside of the circle.

The Annapolis Post Office at 1 Church Circle was built in 1901, with additions in 1926 and 1939 to accommodate newfangled automobiles. It is now part of the complex of state offices radiating from the capitol.

  • number of windows on the front of the second floor _____ PLUS
  • number of carved stone swags between them _____ = B

Carefully cross to the white fountain, a memorial to 19th-century rector Rev. William Scott Southgate, then again toward the green fountain.

  • number of sides on white fountain _____ MINUS
  • number of years "younger" School Street is than its neighbors _____ = C

Continue past an early 20th-century building that absorbed three 19th-century buildings into itself, and cross Main St.

The restaurant at Maryland Inn is called the Drummer's Lot because the land it's on was intended to belong to the Drummer of the Town, Maryland's equivalent to the Town Crier. Irrelevant but true!

  • address of Maryland Inn _____ MINUS
  • number of letters in the name of the duke's realm _____ = D

Continue past Bank of America, the newest building on this route; the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties says it has "no architectural significance," and they are not wrong. Keep walking!

Although the county had a court system dating from 1650, the Circuit Court building wasn't even started until 1821, but they've made up for lost time by renovating and adding on fairly regularly.

  • most frequent digit above courthouse door _____ MINUS
  • number of sides on either marble panel in courtyard _____ = E

Reynolds' Tavern was originally built as a hat shop, then was used as a tavern, a bank (specifically Farmers Bank, which operated next door until 2003), a library, and a hotel. The cellar windows used to be about a foot longer, but had to be shortened significantly when Church Circle was paved.

  • last digit of the name of the pub under Reynolds' Tavern _____ MINUS
  • number of dots between "Farmers" and "Bank" _____ = F

You've completed your walk around Church Circle, and should find the cache at

You needn't leave the sidewalk. Happy Hunting!
