Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the “Road to the Buffalo Trail”, which is a hikeable/bikeable road along the Blackfoot River above Johnsrud Park. For centuries, native trails, wagon roads, and railroad beds followed the north bank of the river. The trail was used by Native Americans to get to a valley where they could hunt buffalo. Capt. Meriwether Lewis and eight members of the Corps of Discovery followed this trail in July 1806 on their return trip of discovery. In recent history, Milwaukee Railroad’s Old Big Blackfoot Railway operated along this stretch of land hauling logs to Bonner. In the 1970’s, the railway grade was abandoned leaving a level, gravel trail that can be easily travelled by biking/hiking. The trail follows the north bank of the Blackfoot River and provides some excellent scenery and views of the Blackfoot.

The trailhead is located approximately 6.5 miles up Johnsrud Park Road from HWY 200. Follow the road to Whitaker Bridge, cross the Blackfoot River, and take an immediate left turn into the parking area. The trailhead begins at a gate at the end of the overflow parking area.

The cache is located approximately 3 miles from the trailhead in a field of numerous large boulders among a mixed conifer forest a short distance from the trail adjacent to the Blackfoot. The cache is a medium size camoed plastic jar. Please re-hide exactly as you found it to make it look a natural as possible.

Congratulations! to mttroutslyr for the FTF on our first Montana cache.
