Geološki steber

Karavanke so nastajale pretežno na morskem dnu, ki je bilo včasih plitvo, včasih pa spet precej pod morsko gladino. Vmes so bila obdobja, ko so na tem območju delovali vulkani, ki so bruhali tekočo lavo, izvrgli pa so tudi precej pepela in trdnih kosov, ki so se kasneje sprejeli v tufe in vulkanske breče. Nekajkrat je bilo to ozemlje docela dvignjeno iznad morske gladine, bila pa so tudi obdobja, ko so tu vladale puščavske razmere.

Geološki steber je sestavljen iz kamnin, ki se nahajajo med Dolžanovo sotesko in Tržičem.

Kremen je najtrdnejša kamnina in najstarejša v soteski. Tako kot vse kamnine v Dovžanovi soteski je tudi ta usedlina ali sedimentna kamnina. Nastala je na podoben način kot trbiška breča. Pred skoraj 300 milijoni let so bile Karavanke pod plitvim morjem, reke so vanj s kopnega prinašale prod, pesek in glino iz katerih so kasneje nastali konglomerati. Prodniki so zelo lepo zaobljeni, kar kaže na njihovo dolgo pot. Tesno se dotikajo drug drugega, vmesno vezivo pa je zdrobljen kremenov pesek.

Peščenjak je najmlajša kamnina na tej poti in je nastal v obdobju spodnjega perma, torej je star okrog 250 miljonov let. V obdobju ko je tu vladalo puščavsko podnebje, za katerega so značilne velike temperaturne razlike med dnevom in nočjo ter majhna količina padavin, so velike kamnine pod vplivom vremenskih razmer razpadle na drobne koščke oz. pesek. Ko pa je to območje zalilo plitvo morje so se ti delci skupaj z meljem in glino sprijeli v novo kamnino.

Trbiška breča je dobila ime po kraju Trbiž v Italiji, ker so jo tam prvič našli, kasneje so ugotovili, da se v Dovžanovi soteski nahaja popolnoma enaka kamnina. Je malo starejša od peščenjaka, stara približno 260 milijonov let. Nastala je, ko so bili veliki predeli apnenca dvignjeni nad morsko gladino. Zaradi močnih notranjih zemeljskih sil so bili ti razkosani in zdrobljeni. Manjši kosi so se v velikih količinah nabirali na strmih obalah. Zaradi težnosti je ta gruščnati material večkrat zdrsnil v plitvo morje, v katerega so kopenske vode prinašale melj, pesek in glino. Ta drobni material se je pomešal z apnenčevim gruščem in stvoril trbiško brečo, ki jo od konglomerata ločimo po ostrih robovih njenih sestavnih delov.

Dovžanova soteska se ponaša z zelo lepim trogkofelskim apnencem različnih barv in barvnih odtenkov, od bele preko sive, rožnate, mesno rdeče do črne. Rdečo in rožnato barvo je povzročila različna množina rdeče preperine apnenca – terra rose. Apnenec je edina fosilonosna kamnina v Dovžanovi soteski. Najznačilnejše oblike ostankov življenja v Dovžanovi soteski so morske lilije, alge, ramenonožci, fuzulinide

Najstarejša kamnina v soteski je kremenov konglomerat iz katerega je sestavljeno Tržiškobistriško slapišče.

Geological column

Quartz is the strongest and oldest rock in the gorge. Like all the rocks in the gorge Dovžan it is also sedimentary rock. It was formed in a manner similar to tarvisio breccia. Almost 300 million years ago were Karavanke under a shallow sea. Rivers colected different material from which they later formed conglomerates. Pebbles are nicely rounded, which showed their long journey.

Sandstone is the youngest rock along the way and is made in the lower Permian period, ie old around 250 million years. Trbiška breccia is named after the place in Tarvisio in Italy because it was first found there, and later found that the Dovžan Gorge has exactly the same rock. Dovžan gorge boasts a very beautiful limestone of various colors and shades, from white through gray, pink, meat red to black. Red and pink color is caused by different amount of red soil - terra rose. Limestone has also a lot of fosils in the gorge.

The oldest rock in the gorge of the quartz conglomerate which constitutes Tržiškobistriško waterfall.
