Geocache Description:

Piket-bo-berg is an area on the top of the mountain behind the village of Piketberg. One drives the N7 and usualy just look in awe at this special feature, but forget that there is a whole community up here. The area has many farms that produce export quality apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, oranges as well as olives, vegetables and cut-flowers.  The area has breathtaking vistas of the sea, Table Mountain and the Groot Winterhoek Mountains. On a crisp clear winters day you can see forever. The mountain has farmers that are cycling enthusiasts and have built fantastic single track routes which test your fitness whilst showing you the scenery the area has to offer.

The division of Piquetberg originally fell under the district of Tulbagh, whose drostdy was transferred to Worcester in July 1822, but in about 1838 most of its area was brought under the district of the Cape. It was proclaimed a separate sub-district on 9 March 1848, and was raised to divisional status in 1857.
In 1833 the Dutch Reformed Church constituted a parish in the district of Piquetberg. Two years later, in 1835, the Governor of the Cape, Sir Benjamin D'Urban, made it a grant of the government farm Grootfontein for the purpose of establishing a kerkplaats (church farm). The first sale of plots took place in 1841, and on 9 March 1848 it was proclaimed the magisterial seat for the new district of Piquetberg. Its name was derived from the Dutch "piket" or the French "piquet", meaning a military post, and may have its roots in the conflict between Dutch settlers and Khoikhoi in 1673-76.
At that stage the Dutch established a military outpost on the mountain, which subsequently became known as the Piquetberg.

After explaining Geocaching to Hennie the property owner, she gave permission for me to place this cache, and promised to keep an eye on the container.  When approaching GZ remember to hoot three times, so she is aware of you on her property. Enjoy your visit, I know she will appreciate your visit. If Hennie is not available, she says there will always be someone that can help with the location of the cache.
