This cemetery is near the settlement of Embudo, spanish meaning funnel. A common saying for canyons passing thru a narrow area as the neck of the funnel.
The present settlement of Embudo is not the original one, that older settlement was named Dixon. The name changed when the D&RG RR named the "Chili Line" station here Embudo and the settlement sprang around the RR structures.
In the 1930's, Father Kuiper, a priest, donated this land for a cemetery to the people of Embudo and Dixon to use. It is a Catholic cemetery.
Spirit caches are a series placed at or near NM cemeteries in hopes of paying respect to the Pioneer ancestors having "gone" on before us, and, possibly picking up a bit of history on the area.
